How to Jailbreak/Unlock with Redsn0w on a Mac

The Info:

The other day the iPhone dev team released redsn0w version 0.7 for the Mac. Redsn0w is a program that was originally created to overcome the change in the iTouch 2g’s hardware that prevented the QuckPwn or PwnageTool from being able to jailbreak the iTouch 2g. The dev team has now taken this amazing tool and made it work on the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iTouch 1g, and iTouch 2g and it can even unlock the iPhone 2G! They’ve also given it a GUI (previously, it was a command line only tool). Follow the direction below to jailbreak all four iDevices (the iPhone 3GS isn’t supported… Yet) and unlock the iPhone 2G.

The Requirements:

  1. A Mac
  2. iPhone 2G
  3. or iPhone 3G
  4. or iTouch 1g
  5. or iTouch 2g
  6. An internet connection

The Process:

  1. open redsn0w.app.
  2. click “Browse”.

  3. Select your firmware.

  4. redsn0w will say that its “Processing firmware…”.

  5. It will then say the “IPSW successfully identified.”
  6. Click next.

  7. Redsn0w will then download and patch the firmware.

  8. Select to install Cydia (If on iPhone 2G, you can choose to unlock it too).
  9. Click Next.

  10. Read what redsn0w says.
  11. Plug in your iDevice.
  12. Hold down the power button and slide to power off.
  13. Once it turns off, click next

  14. Redsn0w will walk you through the directions to put your iDevice into DFU mode.

  15. Redsn0w will then begin the jailbreak process.

  16. Your iDevice should reboot.

  17. Redsn0w will then upload the jailbreak files to your iDevice and it will reboot again.

  18. Once it reboots, your iDevice will begin the actual jailbreak.

  19. Click “Finish” in redsn0w and wait for your iDevice to reboot one final time.

  20. Once it finishes rebooting, you should see Cydia on the home screen.

  21. Launch Cydia and it will “reorganize” your iDevice (move some of the larger files to the media partition to make room on the root partition).

  22. Launch Cydia again and let it check to see if there are any updates for Cydia. (there should be some).

  23. Once Cydia finishes updating, click the button that says “Close Cydia (Restart)”.
  24. Open Cydia and click “Search” in the bottom right corner.
  25. Do a search for “BigBoss Recommended” and install that package. It should install a very large amount of recommended software.

  26. Click “Return to Cydia”.
  27. VERY IMPORTANT – Follow the directions here to install my Cydia repo.
