Our good friend geohot has now created a software unlock for the iPhone 3GS that’s super easy to install and works amazingly! Check out the post on his site for more info about it: http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2009/07/make-it-ra1n-im-makin-it-sn0w.html.

The Requirements:

  1. iPhone 3GS
  2. A legit AT&T SIM card (so you can download purplesn0w)

The Process:

  1. Jailbreak your iPhone 3GS first if you haven’t already: How to Jailbreak the iPhone 3GS
  2. Disable 3G if you are going to use a carrier that doesn’t support it yet. (For instance, if you are going to use T-Mobile)
  3. Open Cydia.
  4. Click “Manage”.
  5. Click “Sources”.
  6. Click “Add”.
  7. Type in the source: “apt.geohot.com”.
  8. Click “Add Source”.
  9. Click “Return to Cydia”.
  10. Click “Search”.
  11. Search for “purplesn0w” (that’s “purplesnow” with the number zero in the sn0w part).
  12. Install “purplesn0w”.
  13. Reboot your iPhone 3GS.
  14. Once its booted, swap the AT&T SIM card for your non-official SIM card.

Congrats! You should now have a fully unlocked iPhone 3GS that will work on any carrier.
